Tesla
The cheapest hardware bet in the industry and the loudest. Tesla's camera-only approach means a robotaxi costs a fraction of a Waymo, but it reached public driverless operation four years later and still does not disclose how much of each fleet runs unsupervised. The Cybercab — no wheel, no pedals — entered paid service in Austin in September 2026 and promptly drew an NHTSA compliance investigation.

Where Tesla is live
Every city on the tracker that Tesla touches — as operator, as the app the ride is sold in, or as the stack underneath. A dot marks a city, not a service area.
- Driverless & paidOpen to the public, fares charged, nobody in the driver's seat.
- Paid, operator onboardAnyone can book and pay, but a trained operator rides along.
- AnnouncedCommitted city with a date or a permit, not yet driving passengers.
Boundaries from Natural Earth (public domain). Status is Tesla's own stage in that city: a city can be driverless for a competitor and testing-only here.
