Zoox
The purist's bet: rather than retrofit a car, Zoox built a vehicle with no driver's seat at all, which forced it through a bespoke federal approval route. It won the first NHTSA commercial exemption for a purpose-built robotaxi in July 2026 and started charging fares in Las Vegas three weeks later. Scale is still small, but no competitor has a cleaner answer to what a car without a driver should look like.
